How Do Auto-Dimming Rearview Mirrors Work?

The glare from the headlights behind you reflecting in your rear-view mirror and shining in your eyes at night is not only aggravating but also downright dangerous. This temporary blindness can slow your reaction time, possibly impairing your vision even seconds after it’s not there anymore.

Auto-dimming rear-view mirrors eliminate dangerous glare by using an embedded sensor to gauge the level of light shining on the surface. When the light threshold is exceeded, the mirror sends an electrical charge into a gel that is stored behind the glass surface. This gel is transparent under normal conditions, but once it’s zapped by electricity, it undergoes a chemical change which causes it to darken, thus darkening the surface of the rear-view mirror itself. The mirror will still reflect objects behind you but will not reflect bright lights.
